Occupational Health Hazards in the Medical Field Kim Chastain AB TECH April 24, 2012 Abstract Medical personnel come into contact with a complex variety of deadly toxins. Contact comes from industrial cleaners, sterilization products, radiation, medications, and mercury. Side effects of these toxic materials are known to lead to a variety of cancers, miscarriages, asthma, birth defects and metabolic syndromes. Government agencies have been negligent in protecting healthcare workers from exposures to these materials.There has never been a government-funded study of these materials and their impact on health and the environment; however independent studies have shown higher rates of disease in healthcare professionals and their children. According to Environmental Working Group (2007), of the 82,000 chemicals in record only around one hundred and eighty have been tested. Thousands of pollutants can be found in any medical setting yet only six have government workplace safety standards. Exposure standards fall to individual facilities to regulate, and vary wildly depending on facility understanding of these toxins. Continued training is recommended when new chemicals and equipment are changed. Healthcare facilities should also be tested on a yearly basis to identify areas of contamination to the employee and patient. Keywords Toxin, hazards, occupational disease In 1970 President Nixon and Congress instituted OSHA to create a safe working environment and NIOSH (The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) to research workplace hazards.While OSHA and NIOSH have clear guidelines for common biohazard procedures, almost nothing exists for chemical and toxin exposures. From doctors and nurses to janitors and mail delivery, anyone who comes into contact with these toxins is at risk. The nature of the nurse or doctors exposure is two fold; consumer contaminates from home and industrial contaminates from work. Illnesses reported by medical personnel range fro m chronic skin dermatitis and asthma to acute life threatening conditions; rare cancers, spontaneous abortions, metabolic syndromes and birth defects.The importance of studying the multigenerational human impact of these contaminates is not only to help the lives of the medical employee, but would result in helping to determine the effects on the population as well. Individuals that work in health care should be aware of workplace exposure to hazardous materials found in the medical industry to better protect themselves. While the government plays catch up with science individuals must be proactive in learning about the dangers and what they can do to make their workplace safer. Locating the DangerIt is no surprise that toxins can be found in a medical setting. What does surprise experts is that there are not more regulations and education on how to handle them. There is no question of the impact that these contaminates have on medical personnel and their families. Environmental Wor king Group (EWG) conducted a survey in 2007 to examine exposure and its effects regarding nurses. Fifteen hundred nurses were asked in a survey to list exposure to eleven common toxins found in a medical setting and health problems seen in their children and themselves. The data is staggering.Organizations around the world have conducted their own investigations into workplace exposure and have found the same results. The conclusion is a global pandemic of cancer, miscarriages and illness never before seen in any other workplace. Figure 1 (Environmental Working Group, 2007) An article by Carol Smith (2010) presents InvestigateWests examination into the regulations surrounding medication exposure regulations and chronicles the impact they pose by following the illness of pharmacist Sue Crump. Ms. Crump at the time of the interview was in the end stages of pancreatic cancer.Crump had spent 23 years working in the medical industry mixing chemo drugs. InvestigateWest found that no gover nment agency has any regulations on exposure to drugs; even those that OSHA has deemed as hazardous. OSHA defines hazardous drugs to knowingly cause cancer, birth defects and other illness. Thomas Conner, a researcher for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has spent four decades studying chemo medications on personnel. He emphasizes that, â€Å"There is no other occupation population (that handles) so many known human carcinogens† (Lifesaving Drugs, Deadly Consequences, 2010, para. 1 ). Unlike the US, European countries have taken notice and placed stronger standards to protect its workers, and most have replaced most toxins with green chemicals. Two Danish studies have found â€Å"a significant increased risk of leukemia among oncology nurses and physicians† and extreme risks of multiple cancers for medical workers (A Silent Threat, 2010, para. 10). Concerned over the growing number of studies NIOSH issued an alert on the dangers of handling tox ic drugs; however they are only recommendations and OSHA has no intent on making them regulatory.According to the Environmental Working Groups Survey on Nurses (2007), starting with the Toxic Substance Control Act in 1976, â€Å"the EPA has not reviewed or even begun gathering safety data for more than eighty percent of the chemicals produced or imported in annual quantities exceeding ten thousand pounds† (The System is Broken, para. 4). This brings in to question the very nature of the agencies that have been put into place to protect its citizens. There seems to be no clear cut standard for how these government agencies handle the data and respond to the people or each other.While each one clearly knows and verifies the existence of the dangers they do nothing about it. Common Toxins Anesthetic Gas Anesthesia is commonly used in dental and surgical procedures. Gases escape can from facemasks, tubes and even regulating machines that were created to control exposure. Although NIOSH has recommended exposure limits for many gases used it is primarily to protect the worker during the procedure. These gases have been found to increase neurological issues, lowered fertility in men and women, miscarriage and higher rates of birth defects in children; articulalry neurological complications. Medications According to EWG, the FDA has approved close to six thousand medications. Even in trace amounts these medications can pose serious effects. No study has ever been conducted to examine the hazard of combining medications in humans. Some chemo drugs are capable of damaging DNA and are known cause certain types of rare cancer. Antiretroviral drugs used for HIV treatment are even more dangerous to a developing fetus. Unnecessary exposure to medication has been linked to everything from skin rashes, asthma, cancer, infertility, and birth defects.Latex and personal care products Latex is a common material used in gloves, catheters, and other plastics. Personal care it ems range from shampoo to shaving cream used by patients. Both were linked to asthma and allergies, ranging from mild reactions to life threatening anaphylaxes. Medical professionals have already been found to have to leave the job because of the seriousness of their allergies. Mercury containing devices Mercury can still be found in devices ranging from thermometers, blood pressure cuffs to non-medical devices, such as batteries and thermostats.It is known to be extremely toxic to the brain and nervous system. Neurological disorders have been found to be higher in medical personnel than other occupations. Children born to nurses exposed during pregnancy have higher degrees of developmental delays and central nervous system diseases. Radiation Radiation can be found in medications and used in life saving medical devices. Imaging machines, such as MRI and CAT scans, have been shown to emit radiation even when protections are in place. Radiation exposure has been proven to cause an in creased rate of miscarriage, cancer and birth defects. SterilizationEthylene oxide & Glutaraldehyde are chemicals used to sterilize anything that cannot be sterilized by steam. Whether the exposure was from the liquid form or spread through evaporation it has been linked allergies, anemia and severe migraines. Recommendations Although many of these contaminates are needed, immediate action should be taken place to insure the health of everyone who works near them. Rigorous standards for the handling of and the exposure to toxins; updated and complete profiles for chemicals and their affects on health and the environment; and investigations on healthcare personnel and their children’s lifespans.Education should be as fast paced as chemical production. Healthcare facilities should have mandatory guidelines for replacing hazards with green alternatives when available and only extensively trained personnel allowed to handle them. Conclusions Since the inception of control and reg ulation of toxins and chemicals the government has banned production of only one chemical, and set very few exposure standards for personnel that are exposed to them. Its apparent in the data that what’s being done currently is not working.No other workforce has been asked not only to risk their lives but the lives of their children as well. Bringing to mind the aftermath of 9/11, when the nation watched as military, medical personnel, police, FEMA, and firemen ran to act. Only this time no one seems to be watching. Families of medical workers, like Sue Crumb, have been left to wonder why nothing has been done. It has been reported that the nursing shortage is over but is expected to reemerge again by 2020 as the largest employed group of nurses retire.If the healthcare industry continues to be a hazard to its staff one could only assume that the shortage will become worse. No one can deny that the current burden on the healthcare system is extreme. When our health care profe ssionals begin to get sick the burden will become greater. A Proposed Faculty Performance Evaluation System for University of the Visayas-Dalaguete

Problem StatementThe Faculty Performance Evaluation System will seek to answer what enhancement and design the school can adopt for a more effective and efficient automated System. Our project will provide the benefits and help the school to collect the feedback from the students and provide security and privacy respectively.Specifically, it endeavors to answer the following questions:1. Why is there a need to replace the manual system with an automated one?2. What will be the benefits of having the automated faculty performance evaluation system in the University of the Visayas – Dalaguete?3. How can automated faculty performance evaluation system help the school?4. How can we provide security to our system?ED: What are the first steps that SIG schools and districts should take when re-thinking their teacher evaluation systems? CD: First, there needs to be an intense dialogue with faculty members about what constitutes good teaching. They need to develop a shared understandin g of what is good practice. They can do a book study that defines good teaching in a coherent way, what it looks like, and what counts as evidence of good teaching. I've worked on a framework for effective teaching. The big idea that underlines this framework is that students learn from high levels of student intellectual engagement.There’s a ton of research on that, but it’s hard to do because in general, students aren’t taught that way. The challenge is to get people to understand how to engage students in learning. Second, there needs to be an effort to create a culture in the school around continued learning and professional inquiry. You’re not done learning when you start teaching. Teaching is enormously complex work that people work to master over their entire careers. No one should act like it’s easy because it’s not. Then, teachers can move to on the ground work with students.They can analyze student work for levels of student engage ment. If they have money to spend, they can get equipment to videotape themselves teaching to use for self-reflection. It’s a powerful technology because teachers can watch their own lesson, observe other teachers, share their practice, and engage in dialogue. ED: Are there specific challenges in implementing a thoughtful evaluation system in low-performing schools? CD: Not really. It’s the same challenge, just harder. One of the problems in low-performing schools is that teacher turnaround is higher, which means they could have more novice teachers.Beginning teachers, because they are inexperienced, need more intensive supervision and coaching than do their more experienced colleagues. It's essential that both the teacher and the district ascertain whether they are a good match. On the flip side, of course, new teachers frequently come with a lot of energy and enthusiasm for the work, and that can make a real contribution to a school. But the higher level of supervisi on by a principal takes time, and that's one of the issues with any evaluation system – finding the time to do it well.I don't think it's helpful or harmful. It's just the nature of it. There’s also the school culture element. Let’s say you’re my principal and a typical observation is one where you come in, observe my lesson, write it down, and tell me what I did wrong or right. I, as a teacher, have done nothing. If the school culture is one of inspection, then all I would want to do is to â€Å"get through† the evaluation. I’m not going to try anything interesting in my class while you’re there. That typical process of where my role as a teacher is passive. There’s no learning for me as a teacher.Creating a different type of culture is a leadership challenge. For the new teachers not to be performing at the same level as experienced teachers – that’s natural. The culture should be one where professional growth a nd learning are understood to be part of everyone’s job forever, and learning is not a sign of deficiency. To have an effective teacher evaluation system, you need good, trained evaluators and more time from teachers and administrators to discuss performance and improve teaching and learning. ED: What about the problem of resources, especially in times of budget cuts?How do schools and districts keep their commitment to this type of a teacher evaluation system? CD: I don’t think it’s a resource problem. It’s a prioritization problem and also a training issue for evaluators. When a teacher or union activist says that principals don’t know what they are doing when they’re evaluating teachers, they are usually right! One of the things I’m working on is an actual evaluator certification program. The need for credentialing evaluators has been written into state law in a few places including Illinois and New York.

Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange Essay

A Clockwork Orange is set in futuristic Britain. The main character and narrator, Alex DeLarge, is the leader of a sadistic teen gang. Alex introduces his â€Å"droogs†, or friends, as Pete, Georgie, and Dim. After getting intoxicated at the Korova Milk Bar, they perform a series of â€Å"ultra-violent† crimes. This includes beating a homeless man, fighting a rival gang, and theft. They also play â€Å"Hogs of the Road†, a game in which they steal a car and drive recklessly with the intention of causing harm to pedestrians and/or other drivers. They decide to carry out a â€Å"surprise visit†, where they go to a stranger’s home and pretend to be in danger in order to gain entrance. They sing and laugh while harming their victims, a married couple. The man is beaten, bound, and forced to watch his wife being brutally raped. The gang then returns to the Korova for a nightcap. This is when we discover Alex’s love for classical music, and the dis content that the gang feels toward their arrogant leader. Alex returns home to his parent’s house. He has a drawer full of stolen goods. He listens to Beethoven before going to sleep. The joy he finds in classical music is strongly related to the elation he feels throughout acts of ultra-violence. The next day, Alex plays hooky from school. His parents appear to be very passive, lacking the courage to create boundaries. They believe that Alex is out late due to his â€Å"jobs†. Later that day, Alex has sex with two unfamiliar girls. Afterwards, he quarrels with his droogs about a scheme that Georgie constructed. As the gang walk along a marina, Alex clubs Georgie in the groin and kicks him into the water. Dim swings his chain at Alex, who ducks out of the way, resulting in Dim in the water as well. Alex deceivingly offers his hand to Dim; when he reaches for it, Alex cuts him with a knife. It appears that everything is restored while the gang further discuss Georgie’s plan. It involves another surprise visit to a cat la dy’s home. Rejected at the door, Alex enters through an upstairs window while his droogs wait outside. The cat lady has already called the police. Alex bashes  her with her colossal phallic sculpture and leaves. When he joins his droogs, Dim smashes a full bottle of milk on Alex’s face and he goes down. He is apprehended, told that his victim is dead, and sentenced to fourteen years in prison. Two years into his sentence, Alex becomes interested in the Bible. He fantasizes about whipping Jesus and enjoys the stories of torture. Alex is chosen by the Minister of the Interior to participate in a two week experimental reform technique, and is transferred to the Ludovico Medical Facility. Alex is injected with a substance that makes him feel sick while he is forced to watch a montage of vicious scenes involving brutality. Later films are accompanied by classical music, more specifically, Beethoven. As he comes to associate sickness with violence, the whole idea of violent behavior becomes so overwhelming that he would rather die than consider it. Alex returns home to discover that his parents have rented his room to a lodger. A victim from his past recognizes him and attacks him. Two police officers intervene. The officers are Alex’s old droogs, Dim and Georgie. They drive Alex to a country road and take him to a low water tub, where they hold his head under water and beat him. Left alone, Alex stumbles up the road to a house of a past victim, Mr. Alexander. He recognizes Alex from the newspapers, but not initially as the person that raped his late wife and put him in a wheelchair. Alex is drugged and slowly regains consciousness in a locked room upstairs. Mr. Alexander and his affiliates are downstairs, blasting Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Alex leaps out of the window because of the distress it induces. He awakens in a hospital bed a few weeks later. Alex is welcomed by his parents, the government’s â€Å"cure† has been blamed for the repercussions, Mr. Alexander has been put away, a good paying job is lined up for Alex, and the Minister of the Interior expresses regret by givin g Alex a new stereo. The stereo is playing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, but it does not agitate Alex. It appears as though Alex has regressed to his former disposition, before he was â€Å"cured†. According to the DSM-IV-TR (2000), Conduct Disorder consists of a â€Å"repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior in which the basic rights of others or major age appropriate societal norms or rules are violated†. The person must exhibit actions that include aggression to people and/or animals, destruction of property, deceitfulness or theft, or serious violation of rules. In addition, significant impairment in academic, social,  or occupational functioning due to this conduct must be present. Alex has a variety of destructive traits that are diagnostic characteristics of this disorder. There is not enough information given about Alex’s history to know the onset of these behaviors. Judging from the severity of his actions, I would have to guess that these types of behaviors starte d occurring at an early age. Alex’s aggression can be seen throughout this movie. He initiates the assault of the homeless man and the fight with the rival gang. He carries weapons for these occasions. Alex also engages in physical violence without a weapon. While approaching Mr. Alexander for instance, he kicks him in the face. The rape of Mrs. Alexander is a further portrayal of his aggression, as is his assault of the cat lady. In addition to his physical cruelness, Alex steals from his victims. The DSM-IV-TR (2000), says that â€Å"aggressive individuals with this disorder frequently misperceive the intentions of others as more hostile and threatening than is the case and respond with aggression that they then feel is reasonable and justified.† This is illustrated in the scene where Alex ambushes Georgie and Dim. This is his way of asserting his dominance within the gang after Georgie appears to be taking charge. There are few depictions of Alex damaging property that I can recall. I can imagin e that the stolen car was left in poor condition after Alex’s carelessness on the road. He flips a desk containing Mr. Alexander’s personal items and then knocks over a large bookcase. While violating Mrs. Alexander, Alex cuts her garment off with a pair of scissors. Alex displays an enduring trait of deceit in the course of this film. Alex is the type of person who seeks personal gain through misrepresentation. He is dishonest with his parents about having a job and feigns sickness so he does not have to attend school. He finds a way to penetrate several unfamiliar homes. Originally, he attempts to trick the resident by pretending to be in danger. This goal is achieved at the Alexander home. When this ploy fails, he finds a way to break-in. Another great illustration of Alex’s fraudulence is his interest in the Ludovico technique. The only reason Alex finds it enticing is because it gives him an opportunity to shorten his prison sentence. Under false pretenses, Alex is chosen for the treatment and he achieves his objective. Alex violates rules regularly. He is frequently absent from school, yet continues to stay out late at night. Alex’s Conduct disorder may have developed due to his parents providing a  lack of supervision and his association with a delinquent peer group (DSM-IV-TR, 2000). Initially, I thought Alex should be given a diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder. A diagnosis of ASPD is not given to individuals under the age of eighteen and Alex is only fifteen in the beginning of the story. According to the DSM-IV-TR (2000), individuals diagnosed with Childhood-Onset Type Conduct Disorder and receive inconsistent discipline from their parents are at greater risk of their Conduct Disorder evolving into Antisocial Personality Disorder. Although Alex’s position in the end of the movie is left ambiguous, it is implied that he has returned to his former state. Since he is eighteen by the end of the story, had an early onset of Conduct Disorder, and fits the criteria, I believe it’s safe to say that A lex has developed Antisocial Personality Disorder. The Ludovico Technique is a fictional treatment that resembles Aversion therapy. The goal is to suppress a behavior by associating it with an aversive stimulus. This technique is controversial. Are these individuals â€Å"cured†, or are they incapable of acting on free will based on a new disposition that creates fear? The priest in the film expresses his concern with the individual’s lack of choice. I don’t believe this to be an effective treatment for Conduct Disorder. The root of the problem is not addressed, only symptoms are. A treatment that I would suggest for this disorder is Multisystemic therapy. â€Å"This therapy is used mainly to treat adolescents who are antisocial and delinquent. It combines strategies from cognitive behavioral therapy, parent management training, and various family therapies† (â€Å"Options for managing conduct disorder†, 2011). Treatment is subjective because MST acknowledges that manifestation of this kind of behavior varies. I think it’s important to look at every factor while treating a patient because everybody is different. Sometimes medications are prescribed, but not often. Perhaps a combination of different therapies and medication would be sufficient. I think MST is the still the best option. It appears to tackle the issue from all angles and is a personalized apparoah. â€Å"Studies have concluded that this therapy is effective at reducing delinquent behavior and drug use, and at preventing incarceration or hospitalization† (â€Å"Options for managing conduct disorder†, 2011). Although I believe this is a good treatment option for Conduct Disorder, I’m not sure if Alex would respond to it as well as some individuals. Family support is  vital and his parents are not very active in his life. Additionally, in order for a person to get better, they have to trully want to get better. I’m not certain that Alex feels that his â€Å"ultra-violence† is a problem. In my opinion, MST may be a more effective treatment for somebody younger, with a later onset of CD. I have not researched treatment options for Antisocial Personality Disorder because it is only my assumption that Alex has regressed in the end of the movie. Seth is intrigued by the firm prospect of becoming rich and thus, gets to the extent of becoming a full-fledged professional stockbroker. He becomes so good that he does not need help from his resentful boss Greg. After the success and wealth in the business, things start to get bad. Seth realizes that he is involved in a fake firm of brokerage chop shop that sells stock options on nonexistent companies. He is worried of what his dad will think about him if he realizes the truth. Utilitarian approach has been used in the movie. This approach is objective, efficient and suited for business decision. However, it tries to ignore rights, justice and negative consequences and impacts the results. This approach of ethical decision-making suggests that ethical actions are those that provide the best balance of evil and good. This is evidenced from the conversation like ‘Greed is good’ ‘Lunch

Formation and Evolution Essay A black hole is a theoretical region of space in which the gravitational field is so powerful that nothing, not even electromagnetic radiation (e. g. visible light), can escape its pull after having fallen past its event horizon. Black holes are objects so dense that not even light can escape their gravity, and since nothing can travel faster than light, nothing can escape from inside a black hole. On the other hand, a black hole exerts the same force on something far away from it as any other object of the same mass would. For example, if our Sun was magically crushed until it was about 1 mile in size, it would become a black hole, but the Earth would remain in its same orbit. Even back in Isaac Newtons time, scientists speculated that such objects could exist, even though we now know they are more accurately described using Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. Using this theory, black holes are fascinating objects where space and time become so warped that time practically stops in the vicinity of a black hole. The former types have measured masses ranging from 4 to 15 Suns, and are believed to be formed during supernova explosions. The after-effects are observed in some X-ray binaries known as black hole candidates. On the other hand, galaxy-mass black holes are found in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). These are thought to have the mass of about 10 to 100 billion Suns. The mass of one of these super massive black holes has recently been measured using radio astronomy. X-ray observations of iron in the accretion disks may actually be showing the effects of such a massive black hole as well. Formation and Evolution The primary formation process for black holes is expected to be the gravitational collapse of heavy objects such as stars, but there are also more exotic processes that can lead to the production of black holes. Gravitational collapse occurs when an objects internal pressure is insufficient to resist the objects own gravity. For stars this usually occurs either because a star has too little fuel left to maintain its temperature, or because a star which would have been stable receives a lot of extra matter in a way which does not raise its core temperature. In either case the stars temperature is no longer high enough to prevent it from collapsing under its own weight. The result is one of the various types of compact star. Which type of compact star is formed depends on the mass of the remnant the matter left over after changes triggered by the collapse (such as supernova or pulsations leading to a planetary nebula) have blown away the outer layers. If the mass of the remnant exceeds ~3-4 solar masses (the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit)—either because the original star was very heavy or because the remnant collected additional mass through accretion of matter)—even the degeneracy pressure of neutrons is insufficient to stop the collapse. After this no known mechanism (except maybe the quark degeneracy pressure, see quark star) is powerful enough to stop the collapse and the object will inevitably collapse to a black hole. This gravitational collapse of heavy stars is assumed to be responsible for the formation of most (if not all) stellar mass black holes. Once a black hole has formed, it can continue to grow by absorbing additional matter. Any black hole will continually absorb interstellar dust from its direct surroundings and omnipresent cosmic background radiation, but neither of these processes should significantly affect the mass of a stellar black hole. Properties of Black Holes According to the No Hair theorem a black hole has only three independent physical properties: mass, charge and angular momentum. Any two black holes that share the same values for these properties are indistinguishable. This contrasts with other astrophysical objects such as stars, which have very many—possibly infinitely many—parameters. Consequently, a great deal of information is lost when a star collapses to form a black hole. Since in most physical theories information is preserved (in some sense), this loss of information in black holes is puzzling. Black Hole Types The simplest possible black hole is one that has mass but neither charge nor angular momentum. These black holes are often referred to as Schwarzschild black holes after the physicist Karl Schwarzschild who discovered this solution in 1915. It was the first (non-trivial) exact solution to the Einstein equations to be discovered, and according to Birkhoffs theorem, the only vacuum solution that is spherically symmetric. The Reissner-Nordstrom solution describes a black hole with electric charge, while the Kerr solution yields a rotating black hole. The most general known stationary black hole solution is the Kerr-Newman metric having both charge and angular momentum. Sizes Black holes occurring in nature are commonly classified according to their mass, independent of angular momentum J. The size of a black hole, as determined by the radius of the event horizon, or Schwarzschild radius, is proportional to the mass through where is the Schwarzschild radius and is the mass of the Sun. Thus, size and mass have a simple relationship, which is independent of rotation. According to this mass/size criterion then, black holes are commonly classified as Super massive black holes, Intermediate-mass black holes, Stellar-mass black holes, Micro black holes Conclusion There is very good evidence from astronomical observations that the universe is full of black holes with sizes ranging from six to a billion solar masses in size. Black hole accretion power is responsible for some of the most spectacular phenomena in the universe. These phenomena are NOT well understood, however, largely because of the complexity of the physics of the central accretion flow. There is little doubt, though, that black holes exist at the heart of active galactic nuclei, quasars, and certain X-ray binaries. Accretion power is an important contributor to the overall evolution and ecology of the universe. Electromagnetic observations are currently probing the innermost parts of accretion flows, and revealing interesting effects of the relativistic space-time assuming our models of the flows are not WAY wrong. He believes this invention could increase that growth because he thinks this invention might be used in many other â€Å"appliances† making the product quite versatile and therefore appealing to a wide range of markets. For the person to be able to make a wise decision about how to make his project a reality we look at three types of business, the sole proprietorship, general partnership and corporation, while considering the advantages and disadvantages. After looking thoroughly at these types of businesses, we try to make an informed decision in which type to recommend for the project, keeping in mind all the aspects of the persons â€Å"limitations†. These three types of businesses all have their advantages and disadvantages and based on those we determine that general partnership would be the smartest way to proceed, as the persons â€Å"limitations† minimize the chances of the two other options succeeding. Let us start by looking at closely at the three business types in question regarding the scenario. Sole proprietorship, a business owned and operated by one person. Advantages: He would be in full control, and accountable to no one but himself. In the case listed this could be good because he could manage his time between his business and the home equally, on the other hand it might also bring difficulties both to the home and business as one might suffer from the other. Managing a business by oneself must be a difficult task. It is easily achievable. The startup of a sole proprietorship would be easy, but does success come from ease? There must be some risks and difficulties involved. Less money to be raised for starting up the business. As written in the scenario, the subject does not have access to large funds, therefore this could be a less financially upsetting way to start. Disadvantages: He would be liable for all the debts of the business personally, there is no limit to his liability. Disadvantages: One person may be liable for all debts. If for example a person would only be letting someone use their name in the partnership agreement, that same person, even if he or she could prove never to have had anything to do with the business itself, could be liable. It is therefore extremely important to have a good, detailed partnership agreement that covers all aspects of the partnership. Conveyance of ownership can be arduous. If for example one of the partners died, the partnership would go to his next of kin or whomever is his or her heir. Advantages: The owners are only liable for the funds they bring into the business. Also by opting for sole proprietorship, all obligations of the business would fall on the person, making the venture potentially minimize family time. Even though sole proprietorship could result in great personal success and money if all went as planned, the initial risk would be too great, especially when taken into consideration the fact that the person has little or no managerial skills. By choosing general partnership, the person could, after having the invention assessed, and perhaps patented the â€Å"appliance†, make detailed business plan that could be presented to one or more potential business partners with access to large funds and /or good credit, being careful in choosing someone who can bring to the table something that compensates his shortcomings, like his lack of managerial skills. General partnership also divides the risk, making the project more appealing to the persons spouse. By creating a â€Å"bulletproof† detailed partnership agreement it minimizes the risk of all factors of the disadvantages in general partnership. Choosing the corporation type at this time would not be wise because it requires large funds and could prove too large an undertaking for the person at this point. Although the story is vividly expressed through the use of precise detail and 1800s slang, it failed to give me a reason to care because the characters are depicted as emotionally inhibited. Gloss attempts to draw the reader into the story with Lydia's diary entry, giving a taste of the slang used in the 1800s, boosting the reader's curiosity, and showing a little of Lydia's personality and schooling through the character's writing: "6 April Bought the black hinny Mule today, $18, also the spavint gray as my money is so short and I have hope he will put on wt, his eyes are clear w a smart look in them and his feet not tender. Believe I am now outfitted, shall start out at Day Break." (1) She then moves on to describe each of the characters, and in doing so, their surroundings and how they fit in: "He was cold and wet, and the best part of the day had been used up anyway. He wiped his hands on the grass and let the pinto horse take him toward home. There was little enough comfort there. The house crouched dumb and blind on the high bench in the rain. Dick’s story The Minority Report, and in Spielberg’s film The Minority Report, the future can be altered by using incredible technology. The success of Spielberg’s adaptation of Dick’s short story to film can be determined by the way each was presented. While giving a tour or precrime to Edward Witwer, the main character John Anderton finds the he is supposed to kill a person he never met Leopold Kaplan. When he tries to run and hide from precrime, Anderton is kidnapped by Kaplan. Kaplan is about to turn Anderton in to the police when Anderton is rescued by Fleming. Fleming gives Anderton money and a clue, which leads Anderton to conclude that he has an alternate future that will clear his name. He then goes to precrime to find his minority report and prove to the police that he will not commit murder. He is discovered by his wife, who he suspects is working against him, and they both leave precrime in a helicopter. On the helicopter, Anderton, his wife Lisa, and Fleming get into a fight and Anderton kills Fleming after discovering that Fleming is working for Kaplan in order to take precrime down and establish a military police state. Lisa and Anderton return to precrime where Witwer and they come up with a plan to save precr ime by proving the predictions of the precogs correct where Anderton will kill Kaplan. Emphasis in stressing a point while speaking using facial gestures. The audience will follow you more easily when your movement suggests an idea of importance and holds the groups attention. Your appearance and facial expressions allow the audience to determine how you feel about your topic. One of my most recent memories is the authentic experience at the mall with three of my friends, Eunice, Wing Kit and Cheng Ye. We went there to buy a gift for Cheng Ye’s cousin, Claire, from abroad, whom he has not met in a long time. She is aged 14 years old, her favourite foods are ice- cream and sushi, and her hobbies are sleeping, swimming, cycling, running, and listening to music. She is also more of a sporty and hardworking person. She likes playing on her phone, the colour PINK, using social media such as whatsapp, facebook to socialize. She dislikes computer games and the colour blue. Cheng Ye has not seen Claire in quite a while, and Claire has not visited Singapore in ages, we have decided to get Claire a gift to welcome her. Thus we decided to go to Tampines Mall as there is a wide variety of shops there. Our budget is $50. When we reached Tampines mall, it was very packed with shoppers, were lugging huge shopping bags. The mall was filled with the noisy sound of people chattering and laughing. It was so noisy that I had to shout and strain my voice to talk to Eunice, who was just right beside me. Salespersons were announcing the various offers they were having. The smell of curry chicken entered my nostrils as I while gazed at the patrons savouring the mouth-watering curry chicken, causing my mouth to drool as we walked past the restaurant. Finally, after browsing through many electronic stores, we decided upon an pink shiny earpiece from Courts that costs $20. We chose the product based on her preferences as she liked pink and shiny objects and also because it had a reasonable price and was within our budget. After buying the earpiece, we were left with $30. Thus we decided to get her another gift based on her hobby of sports. We wanted it to be within our  budget of $30, the colour pink and it to be useful and long-lasting. Eventually, we headed down to the ‘ Royal Sporting House’ and chose a pair of pink as it would be useful to her as swimming was her favourite hobby which she did pretty often. Thus, she would be able to use it often as well. In conclusion, this experience of going to Tampines Mall on 29 March 2014, was a wonderful experience.We had a lot of considerations at first, such as her personality,likes & dislikes, the budget for the gift and what gift would she really wanted. However, all of us worked together, communicated effectively and overcame the challenges. So, eventually we decided on the gift. I also think that this experience was an educational and enriching one, as we learnt how to decide on things in a group without having any conflicts and how to take things into considerations before making a final decision. Having just experienced the sinking of his family’s ship, and being put onto a life boat with only a hyena, Pi felt completely lost and alone. Then he met a familiar face from his family’s zoo, Pi saw the Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker onboard. His first reaction was to save the life of Richard Parker so that he may have a companion, and a protector aboard the lifeboat. Suddenly Pi realizes just what he is doing. He is saving the life of Richard Parker, by welcoming him, a 450 pound Bengal tiger, onto the small lifeboat. He experiences a change of heart when helping the tiger onto the boat. Pi realizes that he is now posing a threat on his own life. With Richard Parker on the boat, Pi is faced with not only the fight to survive stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but the fight to survive living with a meat eating tiger. The change of heart that Pi experiences might possibly mean that he is an impulsive thinker. It may mean that he often does something on impulse without thinking it through, and then later regrets his actions. Though he was having bad experiences onboard, Pi maintains his religious beliefs while on the life boat through his daily prayers. He takes time aside each day to say the prayers that he always would say. In one instance, he turns where he believes Mecca is located, and prays his traditional prayers towards Mecca. Pi also often states that he will include specific animals in his prayers, such as the zebra aboard his lifeboat, and the first fish that he ever killed. With Pi keeping his ritual prayers going, it helped him to survive. He made comparisons between that of Orange Juice, the orangutan, and the Virgin Mary, and would also often bring up Jesus on the cross. Truly, Pi’s religious faith remained strong throughout his journey on the Pacific Ocean.

Steinbeck uses different techniques to build up tension and atmosphere in the fight scene of ‘Of Mice And Men’. These methods include powerful images, vivid choice of words and speed of events. Personally, I think the most effective method is the contrast between Lennie’s gentleness and power. I think Steinbeck achieves the full potential effect with this technique, and it really adds to the images in the readers mind. John Steinbeck uses violence in speech to build up tension.Curley says â€Å"Come on ya big bastard. Get on your feet. No big son-of-a-bitch is gonna laugh at me. I’ll show you who’s yella†. This quotation shows the obscene language used in the fight scene, and how it builds up atmosphere. Curley speaks in an aggressive manner and this dialogue shows he was acting threateningly towards Lennie. Not only does the obscene language suggest his fury, it also acts as evidentiary support for how uneducated the ranch workers were.This i s also backed up by the fact that the boss doesn’t swear, suggesting he is slightly more intelligent than his employees, hence his authority. Curley is described as ‘handy’ earlier in the text, meaning he is a good fighter. He also tends to attack an easy target. Lennie is extremely vulnerable, despite his size. Therefore, Curley would be significantly improving his reputation by fighting Lennie, because people would be unaware of his vulnerability and just notice his appearance. The violence in speech is a very effective technique.

For many years there has been many doubts, and controversy about the death of probably the biggest figure of the 20th century, â€Å"The King of Rock N’ Roll†, Elvis Aaron Presley. Many people believe that he still alive and for a lot of reasons in which cannot be blamed for believing so. Elvis Presley is alive and the facts will prove it. After Elvis Presley â€Å"died† on August 16, 1977, there have been numerous alleged sightings of him. Fans have noted alleged discrepancies in the death certificate, reports of a wax dummy in his original coffin and numerous accounts of Presley planning a diversion so he could retire in peace. â€Å"The King† was just 19 years old when he began his career working with Sam Phillips, owner of the legendary Sun Records. Elvis’ first single, â€Å"Heartbreak Hotel†, released in January of 1956 and was a number-one hit. Presley quickly became the face of the newly popular sound of rock and roll for many appeara nces in the network television and successful music records. His gifted voice wasn’t the only thing that made him successful; his unique style of performing was very electrifying and charismatic, that you couldn’t just sit down and watch him perform. By November 1956, he debuted his acting career starring in the movie â€Å"Love Me Tender†. In March 24, 1958, Elvis enlisted into the U.S Army and served for two years and earned the rank of Sergeant. After returning to the United States, Elvis continued his acting career along with his music career and was still on top. On May 1, 1967, Elvis Presley married Priscilla Beaulieu after being together for more than seven years and they had a child on February 1,1968 names Lisa Marie; Presley’s only child. On that same year, â€Å"The King† became very unhappy and frustrated with his career; his movies weren’t being a success like he when started back in the ‘60s and his singles were not even reaching the top 40 in the charts. Something needed to change and thus came the famous 68’ Comeback Special that was aired on television, Elvis’ first live performance since 1961, singing his rock and roll hits from back in late ‘50s and other hit singles during his acting career in which put him back in track and once again he quickly became a hit sensation. After that, Presley went on tour for many years with no resting and on 1973; he performed in the history making concert, Aloha From Hawaii that was broadcast worldwide. This was the first global concert satellite broadcast. During that time, Elvis got divorced from Priscilla and it really affected his life and he started to become very depressed and ill. He was addicted to many drugs that he used to gain energy keep doing his concert, to get some sleep and other needs that he was unable to find. Even though he was getting drugs from the doctors, he abused them with no delicacy what so ever. By the year of 1977 he became the complete opposite of his legendary image; incredibly overweight, he could barely move on stage, energy and charisma complete gone and he even had trouble remembering his songs. On August 16, 1977, The King was declared dead from a heart attack, shorlty after , they reported that his death was because a drug over dose. Firstly, we have an author named Gail Brewer – Giorgio who believed that The King faked his death in which inspired her to write a novel on that time in 1977 called Orion and it was a fictional story about a famous person who faked his own death. After the book was released in just a short time, for some reasons the books were nowhere to be found. A woman told the author that when she went to buy the book, she was told that two men in business suit came and bought all of the books. Gail called New York and explained the situation but she never received a feedback about the problem. So she asked herself in an interview; â€Å"why would someone pay an author $60,000 and not put the books back in the store? It just didn’t made sense†. Meanwhile, an investigator of the Los Angeles Sheriff Police Department had an incredibly similar experience. Monty Nicholson wrote a book called â€Å"The Presley Arrangement† in approximately the same period of time. He said; â€Å"Gail Giorgio and myself, did not even know of one another and yet we wrote the same identical facts surrounding the mystery of Elvis’ alleged death from different independent sources†. His book, just like Gail’s â€Å"Orion†, disappeared from the shelves right after it was published. Was this too much of a coincidence? Friends of Monty tried to order the books and the sellers refused to order the book. Were the fictional stories Orion and The Presley Arrangement too close to the thruth? Also, the Memphis Police officially closed the files of the death of Presley before it was even medically or scientifically possible to determine his death. All of the pictures that were taken in the death scene disappeared along with all the notes written by the medical examiners. Gail and Monty viewed a copy of Elvis Presley’s autopsy report and Monty recalled that the autopsy report was â€Å"two pages long, it lacks any of the significant informat ion that is normally found in an autopsy report. And during the course of any normal investigation, this autopsy report would be incomplete and unacceptable†. In the other hand, many fans said that the body that they saw in the casket did not look like Elvis at all. His nose was too flat, nothing like his long, pointy nose. They also said that the body had sweat on him, and bodies don’t sweat. Even Elvis’s cousin, Gene Smith, did not believe that the body in the casket was Elvis. He also said â€Å"his nose looked a little pug, his right sideburn was sticking out, his hairline looked as it has been half pasted or glued on. His hands looked just as smooth as a newborn baby’s behind you know. He was sweatin’ around his hairline, it could have been sweat, it could have been glue I don’t know but um†¦ I just didn’t believe that it was him†, Said Gene Smith. Even if that body really was him, then, why does the body looks like the young version of him back in 1958? This argument is very convincing when the facts are considered. Elvis’s coffin required several pall bearers because it we ighed 900 pounds. Attendants of the funeral reported that the air around the coffin was rather cool. It is suspected that the coffin contained an air conditioning unit to keep a wax body cool – a wax body that was a replica of the King designed to fool funeral-goers. And how did the Presley family get a 900 pound, custom made coffin ready for a funeral that was held on the day after his death? It takes a lot of time to build such an elaborate coffin. And why have the funeral so quickly? Some speculate that the immediacy was intended to make it as difficult as possible for the people who were Elvis’s biggest fans (heads of fan clubs, etc.) to attend the proceedings. It could be a concern that they might recognize the flaws in the wax replica. Elvis was an 8th degree black belt whose hands were rough with calluses, yet the body in the coffin had hands that were soft and pudgy. The body in the coffin had a pug nose and arched eyebrows (unlike Elvis) and most importantly, one of the sideburns on the â€Å"corpse† was loose and falling off. A hairdresser later reported gluing the sideburn back on the body. Back at Elvis’s home, Graceland, there are some curious facts about Presley’s grave. His second named spelled â€Å"Aaron† on the headstone even though he officially changed his name to one â€Å"a† on his birth certificate and that he was not lying beside his mother which he had an incredible bond with her, it wouldn’t make sense if he wasn’t buried next to her, instead, he was buried next to his father’s and grandmother’s grave and that would not be something that Elvis would have wanted that because back when he was â€Å"alive†. He always mentioned that if he would have died, he would have wanted to be buried beside her mother. Four months later after Elvis was reported dead, Mike Joseph and his family went to Graceland to see where Elvis was left to rest. They spend some time there, took some pictures and returned back home. Now what Joseph didn’t notice in many years was that one of the pictures he took showed a man sitting in a chair looking outside the house at the fans that walked by his headstone. Kodak examined those pictures and said that the pictures are original and were not altered at all. They were taken in sequence, uncut, and the motion number said that it was manufactured in 1977. Elvis Presley was involved in many law enforcement, he had a lot of love for law enforcement. Elvis was connected with the Memphis Police, in Denver, even the L.A.P.D. Elvis was always very interested in Law and Order, and he always wanted to work in the Federal Government. Having his desire of obtaining a Federal Badge, he one day wrote a letter to the president at that time, Richard Nixon, while The King was headed to Washington offering his services as an agent at large because he knew that he had the power and fame to get pretty much everything. So you can tell that he could easily fake a death with the power he had in the Federal Government. Gail Brewer took a copy of Elvis’s letter to Nixon and a copy of his death certificate and by comparing the writings she claims that Elvis wrote his own death certificate (see pictures at the end). Monty Nicholson asked himself that if Elvis faked his death, he would have need money to support himself. So he went to research his question and found out that three months before Elvis died, he cashed in three life insurance policy for two million dollars, shortly after his death there was a private checking account with an excess of one million dollars that mysteriously disappeared and there is still a remaining insurance policy that remains to be cashed. By the years, there were more sightings of The King. Gail Brewer received a phone call from a nurse saying that a man that looked identical to Elvis Presley entered the hospital to visit Muhammad Ali. The King and Ali were very close friends back then. The day Ali left the hospital, a picture was taken, him leaving with three men and the last one on the back was the guy that looked exactly like Elvis, or maybe it is him (see picture at the end). And lastly, the most recent rumor is about a mysterious man named Jon Cotner and many say that he is The King. He sings the same, he looks so much like Elvis and one more important detail and is that he talked like Elvis Presley. There have been many Elvis impersonators over the years, many could mimic his singing, but none can mimic his heart. The way Jon speaks is just too similar like The King did when he made jokes and made a fool out of himself during concerts, one thing I’ve been always sure is that no one could be as cool, smooth and have the swag like Elvis. In the end, Elvis had many reasons to fake his death. Elvis’s life was in danger. He had recently lost $10,000,000 in an airplane/real estate deal with a California based organization called the â€Å"Fraternity† that had links to the Mafia. It is speculated that he corroborated with the government to expose the organized crime ring in exchange for protection – perhaps in the form of a new life and identity compliments of the witness relocation program. Elvis was a prisoner of his own fame. He had many other reasons to leave his life behind. Because of his incredible popularity, he was the recipient of several death threats, and he was concerned about the safety of his wife and daughter. Sometimes when he wanted to leave Graceland, he would send out look-alikes to distract would be followers. Elvis was also known to ride in the trunk of someone else’s car to avoid detection. Once, when he fell ill in Las Vegas, he couldn’t get proper medical attenti on because the hospital was overwhelmed by fans. At the time of his alleged death, Elvis was nearing the end of his career. He was 42, his hair was graying, he was grossly overweight, and his voice was starting to weaken. He was going down hill, and he was too proud to go out with a whimper. He would never want his fans to see him in such an unhealthy condition. Elvis had shown a fascination with death on several occasions. In the days leading up to his alleged death he was reported to have visited funeral homes at odd hours of the night with close friends. Was he doing research? Elvis once faked his death by setting up an elaborate shooting in which would be killer fired blanks at Elvis who had a blood pack which he discharged. It was Elvis’s intention to see how the people closest to him would react to his death. Perhaps what he learned convinced him to do it for real. Also, one of Elvis’ favorite books is the spiritual Autobiography of Yogi. One of the central themes of this book is the relinquishing of one’s wealth and earthly possessions to achieve spiritual oneness. Elvis could do this, as well as address his other concerns of sanity and safety by faking his death and living in exile. Elvis had the means to fake his own death. He is accused of destroying himself with drugs. In reality, Elvis was a pharmaceutical expert. He took a lot of drugs, but he knew what he was doing and was extremely careful. He knew what drugs he could self-administer to create a deathlike state. Further, Elvis’s experience with the martial arts was such that he could slow his heart rate and breathing in order to feign death. Elvis’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, had once created a new identity for himself. He came to this county as an illegal immigrant from Holland, but through various connections managed to create an elaborate identity complete with a passport, birth certificate, driver’s license, and social security number. He would have known how to give Elvis a second life. In addition to Elvis’s ties to the government through his testimony against the Fraternity, Elvis was known to interact with the President of the United States. He was reported in government documents to use the name John Burrows as an alias when he wanted to travel. Some people believe that Elvis worked for the government as a drug agent. He did, after all have extensive contact with many people in the music business who, as we know, tend to dabble in illegal substance. And, of course, we must allow that Elvis’s connections to the government gave him access to the Witness Relocation Program. Now you can clearly see that Elvis Presley is no doubt alive and is just trying to live in peace and for reasons in which he can’t be blamed; the loss of his mother really made a negative impact in his life, the divorce with Priscilla that what bother this not only was because she was the love of his life but also just because he was â€Å"the great Elvis† and always had it his way, this time he didn’t. He definitely had no intensions what so ever to keep doing tours and continuing his career when he was so full with depression and disappointment. So he took the only escape option he had to find peace without taking his life; faking it. Will we one day see The King come out one day? Or has Elvis left the building forever and stay hidden? In the end, it doesn’t really matter what the news report says, what investigators say or d o. Whether it’s the truth or not, only one man has the power to end all this conspiracy and that is Elvis Presley himself and one day, the truth will be revealed.
